Family Vacation to Playa Del Carmen, Mexico!
Since we live in Austin, TX, we tend to visit Jaison’s family in Houston quite often. So when it was time to make plans for Thanksgiving, we decided to make plans with Lejini’s family. Instead of doing a traditional family gathering in Chicago, this year, they wanted to plan a family vacation. After some phone calls and discussions, the trip was finally planned to Playa del Carmen in Mexico!
Playa Del Carmen is part of the Riviera Maya or otherwise known as the Caribbean coastline. It stretches from South of Cancun all the way to Tulum and because of its location, its a popular docking spot for many cruise ships. It was originally a fishing town that later turned into a popular tourist spot and is one of the fastest growing cities in population in Mexico. Because of its location and beauty, Playa is used to host music festivals to sporting events and also used as the set for shooting several shows in Mexican television and also other popular TV shows around the world.
When it came to choosing which resort to stay at, we had a lot of factors that narrowed us down to the final choice. First of all, we had people flying in from Chicago, Atlanta, Washington DC and Austin, so we had to coordinate flights along with having enough room at a resort for all of us and a place that was family friendly for the three kids in the family. We wanted to choose an all inclusive resort as well, so that we wouldn’t have to worry about food and beverages and can just kick back and enjoy our time together. So we all ended up booking through CheapCaribbean.com or AppleVacations.com since they coordinate flights, resorts and transportation from the airport to the resort without much hassle and at a reasonable rate.
The choice we ended up making for our resort was Sandos Playacar Beach Resort. Sandos has multiple resorts in Mexico and in Spain. They are actually opening another resort in Playa in April 2019 called Sandos Palm Bay Playacar Beach Resort. Playacar is a gated area in Playa Del Carmen exclusively for resorts. Playacar is located on the strip of the Caribbean that gives access to white sandy beaches for each resort. To be honest, the rates for the resort was quite high but we also went during Thanksgiving break so that was to be expected. It’s a very family friendly resort with lots of options for kids to be entertained with live shows every night. The choice of food was decent but any place that required a reservation was a ridiculously long wait even after making a reservation so we ended up opting for the mediocre buffet place most of the time because it’s so difficult to wait that long for food when you have kids with you. The rooms were spacious with easy access to pools and the service they provided was excellent. Overall, if you are looking for a family friendly place to stay in Playa Del Carmen, then we do suggest going with one of the Sandos resorts. (Check out our video of the resort!) Location wise, it was great because we were able to go off the resort and into town fairly easily to do some shopping. We also did a day at Xcaret, but stuck to doing the kid friendly things that were available there and saved the more adventurous things for another trip (so we definitely need to make a trip back some day). The three adventure seekers in the family group, did a separate day excursion at Mystic Adventure. Check out our video of that trip!
